Sedation Dentistry
Do you find yourself getting fearful or nervous at the prospect of dental treatment? If so, you are certainly not alone. With that in mind, you should know that there are a number of sedation dentistry techniques available at our practice that can significantly alleviate dental anxiety and ensure a virtually pain-free, even relaxing experience!
Root Canal/Endodontics
A root canal is typically performed when a tooth is so severely decayed or damaged that the only alternative to root canal therapy (endodontics) is tooth extraction. In those cases, a root canal is the last hope to save the tooth. A tooth that has been injured, badly chipped, or is suffering from extensive decay can cause an infection in the pulp and nerve chamber. This infection can create a number of symptoms, including extreme levels of pain, sensitivity, difficulty chewing, gum inflammation, a discolored look to the tooth, and/or an abscess in the tissues surrounding the tooth. With that in mind, an infected tooth may not present any overt symptoms, which is why regular dental check-ups to identify underlying problems are so important.
Root canal therapy is designed to address the symptoms of an infected tooth and sterilize the area. This treatment removes the pulp, disinfects the nerve chamber, and cleans out the tooth to remove bacteria. After filling material is applied to seal the nerves, a custom-designed porcelain crown is then affixed to the tooth to reinforce its structure, give it protection against further harm, and enhance its appearance. For many patients, a local anesthetic is all that’s necessary to minimize discomfort during root canal therapy; however, sedation dentistry techniques can often be utilized for patients who would like to ensure they are as relaxed as possible during treatment.
Sleep Apnea and Snoring
Our practice offers advanced treatment for patients who suffer from snoring and sleep apnea.
Deep snoring can not only be disruptive to your sleeping partner—it can also have a serious effect on whether you are getting a healthy, restful night’s sleep. For patients who have sleep apnea, the condition can cause numerous effects on both physical and emotional health, including a dramatically increased risk of general health problems, and even a heightened risk of sudden cardiac death during sleep. With treatment, these risks can be significantly reduced and patients can achieve a much healthier and peaceful sleep. Dr. Vaccaro will evaluate your symptoms and will help obtain a medical diagnosis using an at-home sleep study (and your medical insurance). Once a proper diagnosis is made, we can then discuss treatment options that are available to you.
TMJ Disorder and Bruxism
TMJ Disorder is an extremely common condition characterized by problems with the temporomandibular joint connecting your lower jaw to the base of our skull. Symptoms from TMJ Disorder, or TMD, can include headaches, jaw and facial pain, difficulty chewing and speaking, bruxism (teeth clenching or grinding), tooth wear, tooth mobility, and tooth migration. Our dentist offers treatment for both TMJ Disorder and bruxism that can effectively relieve symptoms and protect the teeth. Some treatment options are as simple as a protective, custom-fit guard that can prevent further harm to teeth. Sometimes, tooth movement (prosthodontics) is indicated to alleviate problems, and in other cases an Advanced Records appointment will be necessary to properly evaluate and diagnose your particular issues. Occlusal equilibration and balancing may also be indicated.
